Sequins, beading and embroidery

It's been an eventful time since I last posted. Unfortunately most of it has been health related, hence this middle of the night posting. I've got toothache, that keep-you-awake, throbbing type toothache. I think it's actually an infection underneath the tooth as antibiotics are helping. On top of that I've also had a two day migraine. I only tell you by way of apology for my absence, not for pity. Hopefully by the next time we get together all will be remedied. In the meantime, let's get on with the party preparations, shall we?

The annual island party is less than a week away and I'm still dithering about what to wear. You may remember this skirt from last year. See how I styled it up that time here.

I'm pleased to say that the only new thing here are the boots, and oh what boots! And best of all, they're super comfy and I can dance in them - I did my happy dance when they arrived.

Beading, sequins and embroidery - I feel very at home with all these embellishments.

Outfit details - skirt: H&M, jacket: TK Maxx, top, clutch and rings: pre-loved, necklace: old, tights: Dorothy Perkins, boots Zara (still available here).

The top is sleeveless, so if I get too hot, I can just slip the jacket off and I'm ready to dance. I know I said about not dancing cos I'm tea total, but honestly, I just like to give myself a get out clause. I'm a bit funny like that. I think I don't like to build something up to being too wonderful in case it doesn't deliver. It saves you from that sense of anticlimax, you know? On the outside I look like a grown woman and yet inside is the 16 year old me still getting excited about whether I'll be brave enough to get up and dance. I suppose that's where a bit of Dutch courage comes into it, eh?

Golly you can tell it's the middle of night by the amount of blathering that's going on here. There's no filter, just a stream of unconscious drivel I'm afraid. Well done you for hanging on in there in the hope of something worthwhile! But wait, there is something worth a look. I've been doing some sewing, a little bit of hand sewing to take my mind off my toothache.

I bought these velvet trousers for a pound, (yes that's 100 pennies!) in a charity shop in Exeter a couple of years ago and so far I've never worn them. Anyway, I decided to chop a few inches off the bottom and scavenge the bead work from this (very scratchy) top to make...

...these! Beaded crop trousers that are totally unique. The weight of the trim helps to give the trouser bottoms a real swish factor as well as looking lovely, don't you think? It was a labour of love, and did stretch my patience, but I'm so glad I persevered. I'm going to see what I can find in my wardrobe to go with these and will showcase them soon. Thanks for dropping by, and apologies if I've not replied to your comments or visited your blog lately.

  1. Oh, you poor dear, your tooth! I was dealing with a tooth infection a couple of years ago, and then another one recently (June/July/Aug), and I am sending you massive GET BETTER vibes. A bad tooth can affect your entire health. Hugs to you, Anna!

Okay, the outfit. The OUTFIT. Oh my goodness, I want every single piece of it, just they way you've styled it. The bomber, oh yes, I want that, and that 20s-looking top, yes, that would fit right in my wardrobe. Oh, and please hand over the skirt while you're at it. I can't do that pointy of a boot, so those are safe.

Can't wait to see the pants in action! I like your chattiness, dear, don't worry about it. It sounds like you. Be well, hon.

  4. Oooh! I'm excited about your DIY! Can't wait to see them on you!

I hope you are feeling better soon. Tooth issues and then a migraine on top of it all doesn't sound one bit fun. Those migraines can go on forever and make doing anything impossible. Be sure to have the tooth looked at.

Love all the elements that make up this eclectic "Anna" look.

    1. This little DIY project has been a great diversion from the pain. In the meantime things have gone downhill and I've been away to see my dentist on the mainland. Suffice to say that treatment is in hand now.

  5. I bought a sequin skirt last week. I tried it with several tops this am but so far nothing has really worked. Either colour or the texture or the legnth of the tops is not quite right on me so still puzzling. Imagine my surprise when I saw this on your blog today! Your combo really works and suits you so well. Great idea with the trousers. Hope you're feeling better very soon. Tessa xx

  6. Oh toothache is the absolute worst - poor you. I do hope it has gone by the time you read this.

I love your outfit and those boots are fab - fish net boots; who knew?

As for your embellishment of the charity shopped velvet trousers I am so impressed at a) your skills and b) how fabulous they look. Well done, Anna!

  7. I hope you're feeling better. I had the same happen with my tooth during a snowstorm and I just felt so trapped by the pain. It went away after I was able to get out and get antibiotics so yours should be fading fast (I hope!). I love when you have the slower times of the year in your gallery then you tackle some project. And the color and bling combination you have in this outfit is so sophisticated and really a professional level of styling! Get well soon! Julia xx

    1. Thanks so much Julia for your comments. It's been a difficult time, culminating to a mercy dash to my dentist some 60 miles away. I've had some excellent treatment and hope to feel the benefits soon.

  8. The moody greens and blacks combined with the sparkle of beading and sequins is really nice. I love the textures that you are so good at showing off in your stylings Anna. The option to dance at a party is one we should ALWAYS keep open. I like the way you include function with your bling!
I hate thinking of you enduring migraines and toothaches. Pain rarely enhances a day or a look. Hope those issues are both in your rear view mirror by the time the party rolls around Anna.
Your craftily created, velvet crops look wonderful Anna! I love coming up with a way to reuse and recycle bits of embellishment as you're doing here. I can't wait to see how these turn out.
Sending good karma for a return of your healthy energy Anna!

    1. Thanks for all you wonderful feedback Jude. It's the party day today and my outfit is all set, but I'm not 100% well as I write this. I'm going to dose myself up with painkillers and review how I feel as the day progresses. I'd hate to miss out, but will only go if I think I'm going to be up to it.
The crops have turned out much better than I expected and I already have an outfit made up to show them off to their best. It may be January until you get to see them though...

  11. A toothache is a form of torture, I firmly believe, and one that may well have helped many nations turn wars in their favour. You poor poor thing, Anna. I've been blessed to experience a toothache only once in my life but that was when I was about 6 months pregnant and could not take painkillers. As you can imagine, I guzzled an ocean-load of ice cubes GRIN

As for your outfit, ahh. You know I am drawn to it. You and I, we are twin magpies and this entire ensemble is so killer. So so so deliciously (and tastefully) flamboyant xoxo

    1. Long time no hear Sheela! How lovely of you to drop in, and your comments are so welcome. It's amazing how one small tooth can cause such pain. I certainly couldn't have coped with this without painkillers.
