Ted Baker skirt

Here's another outfit from my birthday weekend. If you missed all the fun then you can catch up on the celebrations here. Just before Christmas I bought this rather splendid Ted Baker skirt that I scooped up in TK Maxx when it was discounted by 75%. Too good a bargain to miss I say! The moment I saw it I instantly knew that I wanted to wear it over my birthday weekend, and this is how I did.

The skirt is the only new piece of the outfit. The red sock boots from H&M have been worth the money already and are still favourites of mine. The shirt was from Sainsbury's last year and is becoming a classic piece for me.

I added the bright cerise belt to bring out the pink of the blooms. It was an eBay purchase for under a fiver which is another great bargain. I just love that pop of colour!

I had coerced Steve into being my photographer this day and I really ought to have taken a shot of him. Here was I in my flimsy shirt and flouncy skirt braving the elements on this windswept balcony and Steve was bundled up in his winter coat, heavy boots and flat cap - talk about contrasts!

The little row of cottages behind me are called Blockhouse Cottages and this is where Steve grew up and lived until we married. We had a little boat moored in the bay below the house and would spend our weekends buzzing around the tiny uninhabited islands, fishing, shrimping on the low tides and having picnics on deserted beaches. And now that our children are all grown up we're back revisiting those times during the summer months and still counting our blessings for this idyllic lifestyle.

This lovely crystal pendant was a charity shop find, the triangle ring was from Sainsbury's and the oval one was from East many moons ago.

Looking at this now, I can see that this would make a great outfit for one of my gallery exhibitions. I understand that the fashion for sock boots will fade, but as you probably know I'm not a slave to fashion and will wear this particular trend well past its sell by date. I think that surely has to be one of the perks of being a mature style blogger; I can fall in love with a trend and just add to to my own list of classics without feeling pressured to move onto the next must-have piece.

I can't believe that it's already two weeks since this wonderful party weekend. That wistful look on my face was me trying to capture the moment and hold it dear. Thank goodness I have lots of photos to remind me of those special times with all of the people who helped to make it so. Next month Steve and I have one final joint treat to mark our 60th birthdays. We're off to London to see Paloma Faith in concert at the O2. This will be our first ever concert which is quite funny at our age. None the less, it's an exciting thought and hopefully will be all that we could imagine. We'll be off-island for a week, so rest assured I'll bring back lots of imagery from the trip for you to see.

Enjoy your weekend!

  1. Oooh! That skirt is fantastic! No doubt you felt like a princess wearing it.

I couldn't agree more about the sock boot trend. I've bought a few pairs knowing that they suit my physique and I can walk in them. Trends come and go but footwear that is comfy and cute stays forever in my book.

    Have an awesome getaway!

    1. Yes, there's something fairytale like about a tulle skirt isn't there? I know you'll see this confection many more times over the summer months as a push down the cost per wear of this adorable skirt.

Every single pair of my sock boots (four pairs so far) are exactly that - comfy and cute so have truly earned their long term place in my wardrobe.

  3. I can see why you made an instant decision on that skirt, it's perfection, and styled perfectly too. I can see it in more casual mode as it us but with a polo neck. Hope your tooth is sorted now and you're back home and back to normal. Hugs, x.

    1. I did have a black cashmere polo lined up to wear with this, but it somehow didn't do the skirt justice, hence the fine chiffon blouse instead.

Tooth dramas are over for the meantime and I'm back on the ranch again. My next visit is already scheduled for March on my way back from London - this year is the year of dentistry as I succumb to the need for a huge overhaul. The dentist I've found is working miracles and I trust him not to put me through too much pain along the way.

It's the best part of being older, is that we can pick and choose what tickles our fancy!!!
Fabulous look for a fabulous woman Anna!!

    1. Thanks for that Jodie. There surely have to be perks for being an older style blogger and this picking and choosing without fear of being out of step with fashion has to be one of them.

  5. That skirt paired with those booties is just such a happy mix! I'm sure you're going to find lots of creative ways to wear this skirt. I have a feeling that the booties will always be included!
You didn't mention anything regarding your dental woes. Having gone through a few of my own I hope everything is resolved. Extra shopping in Truro helps make it a more pleasant venture eh?

    1. That has to be one of the best things about sock boots Jude - the fact that they look so pretty with skirts. And yes, you'll be seeing a lot more of this skirt as the year rolls on!
The tooth issue was resolved temporarily and is now lined up for a permanent fix when I return in March. I'm resigned to spending all my hard earned pennies on my dental work this year and that's no bad thing. Firstly it gets this neglected area of my health attended to, and hopefully resolved and secondly I will be forced to shop my closet more too which is also no bad thing.

    1. TK Maxx surely has to be the best shopping adventure ever, Nancy! This store is a veritable Aladdin's cave for not just designer clothes and shoes, but homeware and toys too. I did all of my Christmas shopping there in one fell swoop over four hours last December and think I may make that an annual ritual. Everything you could possibly need and never imagine all under one roof - what could be better?

  7. Very beautiful outfit! I love hearing about your island life and imagining you and Steve boating around. He was very lucky you dropped onto this island! Also, I love how you stated publicly how you didn't care if a trend like the sock booties fades because you're going to wear it until it fades with you! I love that!

    1. Thanks so much Julia. I think that the best thing about getting older is the fact that you know what you love and have the confidence to wear it. I feel I can cherry pick the trends I like and let the rest drift past me - what joy!

    1. Oh thank you Carmen, how lovely of you to say!

This skirt is indeed worthy of a night of dancing and hopefully that opportunity will come my way at some stage this year too. The tulle and petticoats will swish about beautifully!

  13. Again an outfit that I love. I have never seen the beauty of these sock boots until you and Suzanne showed me wrong in numerous outfits. They are great.
Had to laugh when you described the way your husbandwas dressed. So recognisable 😂. At least you don’t get a red nose from the cold. I always do and my face gets all white and (even more) wrinkly.

    1. Thank goodness for sock boots I say! My collection is growing steadily and I always have my eye on the lookout for more.

Thank good for our husbands eh? They never moan and always give it their best - what would we do without them?

They're actually laughter lines Greetje and reflect all the joy we've had so far!
