Off-island

I've had a day off today, filled with lots of household chores, blah, blah, blah, but my reward was a jolly jaunt off-island for a picnic and photo shoot at the end of the day. Steve took me to Samson which was deserted and looking lovely as ever on the high tide.

A day off means dressing down for a change. The jeans are from Next, the top is from H&M but is very old, as are the sandals which are so old that I can't read the brand name on the sole (they came from TReds in Truro many moons ago). The bag was a charity shop find last summer.

Rolled up jeans are just right for jumping on and off the boat. I particularly like these as they're high waisted and seem to hold everything in place better than low rise jeans do on me of late. I seem to be suffering from not just muffin tops, but also there are real signs of that softening around the middle aka the dreaded middle aged spread.

A strange thing seems to be happening to my figure which I suppose I could put down to the big 60. Much as my weight remains more or less the same, there's a definite slackening of skin tone which is not what I signed up for. I know I'm not fat, but I can gather bits of me up in rolls that I never used to have. Sorry, probably too much information!

The view from up here is fab. Rocks, sea and dazzling sunshine.

It's amazing what a little bit of sunshine does for our mood. Just a couple of days ago we had fog and yesterday it was bitterly cold with a strong north east wind ( I was in winter boots and a polo neck) and yet today it could pass for a summer's day. Hurrah!

The decorations on my sandals are cleverly wired so that no matter how long they're packed away every winter, I can easily tweak them back into shape again. The embroidered butterflies and ornamental flowers don't look a bit out of place in the bed of flowers underfoot.

I've lived on the Isles of Scilly for 40 years and this is the first time I've been right up on the top of Samson. The view is stunning and you can see all of the other islands from here.

And here's my photographer, boatman and picnic companion. Thanks Steve for making this happen!

  1. Aside from the household chores the day sounded lovely! What spectacular views!

I feel your pain on the whole distribution of weight changes. It is making me rather cranky, and I'm almost 8 years younger than you. I guess I'm getting a head start and I'm not one bit happy about it.

    Enjoy the sunshine!

    1. It was a great break from the normal routine and one that I thought was worth documenting. From the outside I know my figure looks fine, but it's that gradual softening that I'm less than happy about. Do I have to become a gym bunny too as well as sea swimmer I wonder? Oh man!!!!

      Have a fab weekend!

  2. What a wonderful day! Samson looks amazing, as do those beautiful azure waters. I love your casual outfit, especially that lovely sweater (a very retro shape). F**k, aging sucks, doesn't it?! I have a lot of loose skin from having lost weight 11 years ago, and gravity is doing a number on me all over! Rest assured, you look amazing - always, Anna! You're an inspiration!

    1. It's only five minutes from shore to shore which has to be the biggest perk of living here. And yes, the years are certainly catching up on me Sheila. Everything takes so much more hard work just to maintain, never mind improve! Cheers for your words of encouragement.

      Have a great weekend!

  3. what a fantastic day, so lovely to have a day off and enjoy a picnic!. Glad that sunshine was also collaborating!
I totally love your 'casual' outfit, colorful, cool and comfortable, with an interesting accessorizing!, your sandals are bag are so cute!
Aging could involve some changes in body shape, we've been warned but it's always shocking when it happens!. My mom was used to complain about her 'lost shape' some years ago, but she's now proud of her own aspect, and I would like to take things with the same attitude. Being proud of my mature fabulousness and taking care of my health as much as posible!. I really believe that you're inspiring as a fit and healthy woman who looks fabulous!

    1. It was a lovely end to a busy day off, you're right.
Thanks for your kind comments and also for the insight into your mother's journey of acceptance. I think my writing about these things may well be the start of me coming to terms with the inevitable changes that take place over the years. Being slim isn't the most important thing - it's my fitness and good health which matter most to me, so thank you for reminding me of that.

      Have a fabulous weekend!

  5. Anna, you have a GREAT shape! Think of all the younger folks that have "muffiny bits" and DON'T look nearly as svelte and healthy as you do!! Standing there looking so fresh and colorful, picnicking on your lovely islands, with your Steve is enviable stuff!!

    1. Ah, you're so very generous with your compliments Jude. I think this is the first sign of age - the soft overspill that shows my years, which is inevitable at 60. Any bit of pressure or tightness from a waistband or bra causes a ripple of overflow that's not fat, but skin in a soft gooshiness. Heck, in the grand scheme of things I know I have absolutely nothing to complain about, but those side and back shots are not the most pretty! Your comments are helpful though in keeping a true perspective of things, so thank you.

Hope you're having a lovely weekend!

  6. I'm having a love/hate relationship with the word "gooshiness". It's a perfect descriptor, but I wish I didn't have any of it!!:-):-):-)
