My yellow linen frock

Hello again! How has your Monday been? I started the week with this burst of sunshine aka my new linen frock by Francesca Bettini, a recent purchase from TK Maxx in Truro. I've replaced the self-tie belt for a beaded number from Tu at Sainsbury's some time ago which adds a dash of colour.

I've swapped over to my every day summer handbag, an Oral Kiely waxed canvas bag that's a great size and also a lovely combination of colours for this time of year. My friend Bo gave it to me as a present a couple of years ago, not long after I had visited the exhibition of her works in London.

Jewellery-wise I opted for these orange and lime green rings, all pre-loved. The bangles in yellow and multi colour plastic are second hand too as is the gold metal brooch.

The gold framed round sunglasses were from River Island many moons ago, but are wearing well. They add a quirky edge to any outfit or even a 60's vibe if the outfit calls for it.

The orange strappy sandals were from H&M a couple of years ago.

I'm so pleased with this linen frock that I'm considering trying to make another one myself. I've not ventured into the world of dressmaking, but I fancy that it's not so different from the sewing I did during lock-down. I've sent off for some linen samples and am now torn as to whether I can just wing it and copy the shape of the dress or if I ought to buy a pattern. If there are any experienced seamstresses out there, then please do chip in with your advice.

Wishing you a fabulous week!

Hurrah for 6 years of blogging!

Hello and welcome to my 6th anniversary blogging post!

I can hardly believe that I've been sharing my life with you all for the past 6 years. Has it been fun? Yes, enormous! Has it been challenging at times? Yes, and sometimes I've considered packing it all up and slinking off over the horizon. But here I am, still dressing up and gadding about for your entertainment.

Fiona and I spent a couple of hours at the Tresco Abbey Garden on Sunday taking the shots for today's feature and we did laugh a lot along the way. There couldn't be a better backdrop for my anniversary post when you consider how many plants were in bloom that day. It was a true colour-fest of almost every shade possible - perfect when you consider that my style motto is "Let's bin the beige and have fun with colour!"

Before we go any further let's talk about this beautiful vintage maxi dress shall we? A recent purchase from my mainland trip, I bought it in a retro shop in Penzance, called Black Jacket Vintage. This was its first outing and oh my goodness what a lot of lovely compliments it got! The orange and lilac colours work so well together and the fit is fabulous. The satin edged fluted sleeves are such an elegant touch too; I did feel that I was wafting about in a happy, hippy haze. I'm so pleased to have this in time for summer. I'll be wearing this a lot over the next few months, that's for sure!

In true hippy chick style I've added a huge bangle and big rings in orange.

I've continued the retro vibe with these oversized orange sunglasses from Zara along with the shiny orange perspex necklace which was a boutique find at least five years ago.

The gold and orange sandals were a happy find when Steve and I were on holiday in New Zealand a few years ago.

I'm going to rest up for a moment and allow my followers to take centre stage next. As you'll know I do love to have conversations with my readers, allowing me to build up blogging friendships over time.

This is Susa from Cologne who has been chatting to me for some time now. She was kind enough to respond to my prompt to take part in this colourful feature. Susa says that Anna's Island Style has inspired her to shop her closet in an expressive way, using colours to brighten her mood and day. She's echoed my love for charity shop rings, wearing a pre-loved glass one and another gifted from a friend - sooooooo very Anna, she says. Susa looks wonderful in her orange and yellow outfit, a combination that I'd happily wear myself.  The lime green foliage of the Beech trees compliments her ensemble perfectly too. Thank you Susa for joining me with your burst of joy!

My blogging friend Hilda of Over the Hilda has submitted this fabulous red trouser suit to the feature. In her words: I love your colourful aesthetic and though I am not as adventurous as you I too find colour mood enhancing and uplifting. She has recently been inspired to dejunk her wardrobe and pass on the hardly worn pieces that were clogging the works. Anna's Island Style has helped her to venture into the world of vintage and charity shopping too. Great news Hilda, I'm delighted to have helped!

Jacqui (of Mummabstylish) and I met up in London in 2017 (see here) and have been good friends ever since. It was inevitable during our time together that day we would talk about clothes and I remember she told me about her three colour rule being her guideline to dressing. She said that she felt out of her depth when it came to pattern play. Well, four years on and look at her now - pattern play is no longer a mystery to Jacqui!

Not only has she dipped a toe into the world of clashing patterns, but she's inventing outfits and inspiring her readers to play along too. These aren't baby steps Jacqui - more like huge strides from a confident pattern mixer - hurrah and very well done my dear!

Kezzie runs a blog too (see here) which was the foundation of our friendship, but then she turned up on Tresco one day and boy did we talk! See my blog feature here. We have similar quirky tastes in fashion and she recently confessed that she'd bought some joggers like mine, although hers were charity shopped. She says this outfit is her homage to Anna - Brights like Anna was her post about these colourful trews and bright orange top. Again, another outfit I'd wear in a heartbeat.

Let's continue with the tour of the Abbey Garden, shall we? I'm draped in front of the Shell House, created by Lucy Dorrien-Smith. Her mosaics are to be seen throughout the whole island of Tresco; the combination of shells and pottery add a vivid splash of colour to our school building, to Smith Square and most recently in the garden of the Lighthouse Cottage.

The path through the veg garden is lined with lavender, heavy with the buzz of bees as they gather their nectar. The enormous variety of flowers are pollen heaven for the local bee population which in turn create the much sought after Tresco honey, sold exclusively through the Garden Visitor Centre.

I think Mother Nature wins the prize for being the most colourful!

Thank you for dropping by for my special feature today. I'm quite proud of my 6 year milestone, especially as my readership has continued to grow over the years which is very heartening. Your input is so welcome - it helps me to know that I'm hitting the right spot. Your feedback also fuels and inspires me to be creative, to constantly reinvent myself and keep finding new ways to engage you in Anna's Island Style. Thank you so much xxx

Primark suit and Converse boots - a cool and stylish work outfit

Hello my friends, how are you? I'm doing okay, especially as I've got that Friday feeling. No matter that I'm actually working tomorrow - it's all about that end of the week vibe!

This was today's work outfit, a thoroughly stylish suit from Primark that I bought on my recent trip away. I decided to underplay things by adding a shimmering silk blouse in a neutral hue. Yes, you might have expected a burst of pink or orange to jazz up this rather conservative trouser suit, but hey, not today!

My Converse boots add a playful touch and also give a cool, edgy feel to the look. I love the check on check pattern play.

Mixing old and new pieces is one of my favourite ways of putting an outfit together and this is a perfect example of that. The silk blouse is pre-loved as it the elastic belt.

I must admit, my new hairstyle has restored my self confidence. That long shaggy (non) style was making me feel rather drab, but now I feel all pepped up and ready for fun!

I think this may be the first time I've showcased this bronze blouse. It was a charity shop find from way back when, but at least has been given its moment to shine.

My green pearl necklace has a golden hue which works so well with the blouse. The large ring is a pre-loved piece and the other one was from an airport concession. The rose gold watch is by Michael Kors.

It's funny how a good haircut and decent suit can lift the mood, oh and these new Steve Madden sunglasses help too. I had some lovely comments about the outfit today, one of which was that I looked dapper - I loved that!

I've had a good week; busy at work and I've had some lovely sea swims. On Thursday we also we had our first dinner party in almost 18 months. It's been so long since we had anyone round to our house and yet it felt so easy and natural again. Hurrah for some semblance of normality!

What are you up to this Bank Holiday weekend? Are you going away anywhere? I'll be working on Saturday and hope to get out on Sunday to take some more photos for Monday's feature. The end of the month signals time for our monthly Style Not Age challenge so I hope you'll swing by to see how that pans out this time.

Have a great weekend!

Cornflower blue dress from Fat Face

Hello lovelies!

Yes, you may recall I left a little teaser at the end of my last post about a cornflower blue dress and here it is! This is the Margot daisy patchwork midi in cornflower which is still in the sale, but is going fast (see here). I saw this on Instagram on the very day I was leaving the mainland and it really set my heart a flutter. On getting home I did a search online, but my size was sold out. I rang the local branch in Truro and they kindly offered to hold one for me until I could get in to collect it. A dear friend hot footed it down to the store and popped it in the post. Isn't it lovely?

My summer wardrobe feels complete now with this lightweight frock in such a super colour. It was a really windy corner of the island that Steve and I chose for our shoot, so some of these photos are less than perfect. My belt is askew and the clasp is drifting off-centre. My new hairstyle is being blown all over the show and the dress is behaving like a cling-on in most of the shots. Ho hum.

Side pockets are a bonus feature. The frill above the bust does draw the eye to that area which isn't really my thing, but I can live with it. The dress has elasticated sleeves and waistband, but I thought the addition of a belt was a better finish.

Next time I shall wear my midi length net underskirt with this.

Rings and belt are all pre-loved.

Sunglasses are Quay Australia and my disc necklace is by M&S.

My white patent Puma's are ideal for wearing on the beach.

And last of all, here's the new haircut (and colour) without the windswept look. It's great to have a healthy mop of hair again. Hurrah!

Thanks for dropping by!

Frilled to bits!

Hi everyone! How are you?

Excuse the pun, but I'm frilled to bits to wear this outfit! A monochrome permutation, showcasing these rather old flamenco inspired trousers, it was a joy to pair them with the frilly sleeved blouse to create an outfit that just cried out "Fun!" and oh, what fun I had!

Four years ago I set myself the Black Trouser Challenge - see here. It was the first time I'd succumbed to black trousers since my school days and I was positively evangelical about these delightfully ruffled ones. To my amazement, the weekly challenge ran for 13 inspired weeks and looking back seems to have been very popular gauging by the number of comments each post received.

The eagle eyed amongst you may recall that this is an almost identical take on week two of the challenge, apart from the shoes and accessories. But hey, that was in 2017, so maybe I ought not to have even mentioned it!

What wasn't happening back in 2017, was the almost daily photobombing from Nick Halliday, CEO of the island! Nick clearly is up for a bit of fun too and may well become a regular on the blog at this rate.

You know what they say, "Laugh and the world laughs with you..."

And so, to the details - trousers were from River Island, blouse was from George at Asda, belt was charity shopped, shoes by Nine West, sunglasses by Quay Australia.

Rings are both pre-loved and handbag by Bags of Time. We sell these bags at Gallery Tresco. They're upcycled from old leathers and fabrics by Claudine Sear. Jamie bought me this one for my Christmas and it's my fave bag of the moment.

I love the mixture of classy and playful that these two elements combined say.

And just when I thought I'd regained centre stage ...

... this happens! Timeshare guest and friend Mark Rigby managed to edge into the limelight that is Anna's Island Style. Neatly done, I may add, as he keeps his 2m distance!

The silver disc necklace was a purchase from M&S many moons ago and yet still looks very contemporary.

If this is the 14th feature of these (£40) River Island trousers then that brings the cost per wear down to £2.85. Not too shabby eh?

And one final thing. On Wednesday, weather permitting, I shall be leaving Tresco for a few days on the mainland. I have three health appointments to attend and beyond that I can already feel the siren's call of the shops. This will be my first time off the island in 15 months, a scary thought for a fashion blogger who claims to be ready for a change in retail habits. My aim is to shop responsibly; to buy only what I need or can justify by way of replacements. However, I accept my quest seems almost saintly and therefore am cutting myself some slack as I have a gift voucher left over from Christmas which will see my entry in the Portal of Joy - otherwise known as TK Maxx. Wish me luck!
