Transitional dressing and the big changeover

Autumn, hmmm. Not my most inspiring season: it obviously leads into winter which is the worst time of the year for me. I hate winter. Yes, I said it quietly as I try very hard to be positive about all things. I really have to work hard in keeping cheerful in the dark winter months. I'm one of the many who suffers from the horrible SAD which blights me for every grey day ahead. If you have any remedies or even tried and tested light boxes you can recommend then please do drop me an email or let me know in the comments box. I'd be most grateful. In the meantime, Polly is keeping me smiling.

This is what I call transitional dressing: still bare legs, but the addition of a little jacket which can be removed by lunchtime when the temperature picks up.

Let's just take a moment to admire this bag and shoes combo, shall we? The shoes are suede and are charity shopped from my most recent trip away. The handbag is imitation leather and from a different trip, different charity shop. But hey, don't they look amazing together? Such is the joy of charity shopping and they cost under £9 all together!

So, on to the matter of the big changeover. I spent all last weekend and some of this one, moving clothes out from under beds, suitcases and bags to access all of my A/W clothes. The swap is all done and my summer finery is all laundered and stashed back in every nook and cranny I can find. There has been a lot of dithering re what can be worn in this transitional time. Take this dress for instance. Well, it did make the grade as I can add some coloured tights and long sleeved top underneath to extend the wear of it. I was also pretty brutal with things that just hadn't been worn this summer. I've put lots on to my eBay pending shelves and that will be one of my ongoing winter projects.

Goodbye to the summer brights...

...and out come the winter sparkles.

This is just a snapshot of the wardrobes where it's all lurking. I have clothes spread out over three bedrooms and four wardrobes as well as in dressers and drawers and under bed boxes for shoes, tights and more sweaters. The majority of my shoes are in their boxes under the bed too, mainly boots and brogues. My friend Nicky was very keen that I feature some of my storage, but that's maybe because she's more a minimalist compared to me. Her rummage about in my closets was a bit like a child in sweetie shop.

Outfit details are Jacket: Toxik3, dress: vintage by Peekaboo, top: Primark, shoes (M&S) charity shopped, and bag: charity shopped, rings: old, watch: Michael Kors, sunglasses: Quay Australia.

  1. What a beautiful colour coordination :) - I love the bottle green and cobalt - just perfect. Your dress, with chiffon layer and a jacket are fantastic - you look ever so stylish and trendy in them. Have a great Sunday - Margot :)

    1. So kind of you again Margot, thank you. I thought the tough leather jacket was ideal to offset the very feminine chiffon of the dress. It's all about adding an element of the unexpected to make it fun, I think. Hope you have a great week x

  2. I love this outfit - blue and green together - gorgeous! Of course you know blue and green should never be seen....(rubbish)!

I absolutely love those green shoes but I'm a sucker for anything green. The lovely blue jacket goes so well with the dress.

I'm very sad to put my summer brights away as well but I did enjoy that peek in your wardrobe! What a wonderful view you have.

Hope you have a lovely week

    1. Lovely to have you visit again Veronica, and thank you for all your lovely comments. Thank goodness we don't pay any attention to those rules, eh? I'm a complete sucker for green too, so this is my idea of heaven.
I'm so lucky to live beside the sea, and couldn't imagine being landlocked. The view is ever changing and gives me a lift every day. Hope you have a great week x

  4. That's a beautiful transitional outfit, Anna! The blue and green dress is so pretty, and what a find the green bag & shoes are! Fabulous!

I haven't lived in a place with a "real" winter (or even autumn for that matter) in 25 years, but I still remember the dark and grey days, weeks and months on end and how it wasn't fun... Hope you'll find some relief from you SAD symptoms!

    1. This outfit really makes my heart sing Andrea, so I'm glad you like it too. I can't imagine what it would be like to not experience all the seasons. Nice to begin with I think, but I wonder if I'd tire of it. Thanks for your comments x

  5. Just gorgeous Anna! You bring the colors back to the sea behind you! It's starting to look a little gray already so it's good of you to give it an example of the appropriate colors to emulate!
Your figure is SO svelte and the cobalt blue of the funky, leather jacket are such a perfect contrast to the chiffon of the dress. Transition perfection!
I'm so sorry to hear that you have the Seasonal Affective Disorder. If I see anything new in the way of cutting edge treatment I will certainly pass it on to you. Do you get snow there in your lovely island??? Here in Minnesota we usually have a goodly amount of snow and below zero temperatures. The snow can be so beautiful but the season is way too long for my taste.
Looking forward to your fall and winter fashions despite the weather Anna. I know you will brighten my days and I thank you for that in advance.

    1. It's always lovely to have your feedback and kind comments Judy. This outfit is a favourite of mine and I will most definitely be giving it another spin later on in the season.
A customer of mine told me today that sea swimming in now being prescribed as an antidote to depression! Maybe I need to believe in that and I'll be fine. I do know that when I come out of the sea in the greyest, most windy, bleak morning I do feel almost elated at the sense of achievment. We rarely get snow here, but the rain in the winter is mainly what gets me down. Still, I'll try to be more positive about it now. Have a great week x

  7. I also HATE winter, and I'm not afraid to scream that out my window. As a Canadian I do not do any of the "fun" winter sports. No skiing, snow boarding, skidooing or snow shoeing for me. I truly dislike being cold. I hate snow and ice and dark dreary days that last for all of six hours. Our retirement dream to to live elsewhere for 6 months of the year so we can escape this season. That is the only cure I know of.

I love how you found shoes and a handbag that are a perfect match while thrifting!

I have not started to change over my closets yet. The weather is so unpredictable at this time of the year. I can go from shorts to a lined coat in one day. I probably won't make the switch till November.

    bisous

    1. It seems we all have our own weather and seasonal issues Suzanne. I think I could cope with snow better than the endless grey rainy days we get here. I love your idea of a 6 month retreat to better climes.
The bag and shoes are a huge source of joy currently. I really can't believe what a brilliant match they are. I did get caught out on Sunday when the weather turn very balmy and my autumn/winter wardrobe had very little to offer. Maybe I ought to have held on for a couple of weeks more like you!

  11. Thanks for a gorgeous sunrise (and I note from the time that as our days here are getting longer, yours are getting shorter - although daylight saving kicked in last weekend and it's still a bit of a shock to find that one hour means one hour cooler in the mornings and as yet, not quite light at 5.30!!). That leather jacket is fabulous and is great as a layer to remove if the autumn day warms it. Enjoy reorganising your (very tidy) boxes!! xx

  12. Such a vibrant and colorful outfit, I love it!, particularly love your jacket and those cool shoes matching with your bag! that's fabulousness!
I'm also in love with your dress, and I agree about wearing summery dresses in transitional outfits: layering is cool!
I'm still keeping my summer favorites in the wardrobe, and would try to keep them as long as possible!. I like our warm Autumn but Winter is a different question!
    besos
