Yay, it snowed!

Oh my goodness, didn't it snow? We couldn't believe the forecast when they predicted a blizzard here this far south in the UK, but golly it arrived on Thursday evening big time! This was just as it started and by late evening it was laying inches deep on the ground.

I took a walk out after work to capture this unusual aspect of Tresco, but after only about 10 minutes of walking my camera seized with the cold. Once I got home I managed to switch it back on and the battery was fine, so I can only imagine that the freezing temperature caused it to shut down.

You many not recognise this vantage point, but I often take shots from here of the sunset across the bay.

These houses are known at the Flying Boat Club development, but not often marketed like this!

Can you see the snowman in the distance? It's the first time ever for some of the children to be able to play in the snow here.

Probably the first time too for these exotic plants to be adorned in snow.

I realise these photos may mean more to those readers who've already visited the island, but they're still pretty don't you think?

The blizzard was raging now, obliterating the view across the channel where you would normally be able to see Samson and Bryher in the distance.

Increasingly the view became more and a more like a winter wonderland (and it was the 1st of March!)

This was the very top of the island where I was most exposed to the blizzard. You can see by the palm trees ahead that the wind is blasting them sideways as the snow was starting to fall more heavily. It was at this point that my camera seized up, maybe because I turned to face into the wind and it upset the mechanism.

Sasha and I dodged out earlier on that day to take a few outfit shots in between snow showers. What could be more fitting on a day like this than to wear my leopard print faux fur coat? Well, maybe adding a pair of snakeskin ankle boots? These came to me c/o J D Williams a couple of seasons ago and are still available and even on offer here.

The rest of my outfit is pretty low key for a change - just a pair of black skinny jeans from Primark and an M&S cashmere polo neck to keep the chills out. I had layered a long sleeved thermal tee under that, again from M&S. My green leather gloves were a charity shop find some time ago.

The one thing I ought to mention is the disruption that the snow has caused to our Internet connection on across the island as well as Bryher. The fibre optic cable has suffered some damage and it looks like it may take a few more days to restore. In the meantime I'm accessing (non superfast broadband) Internet through a friend. My access to your comments will be limited in the meantime, so do excuse me if I don't respond quickly.

I hope that life for my UK readers is starting to get back to normal now and wish you a better week ahead!

  1. Oh I enjoyed that! Your island is so pretty and it is so interesting to see it covered in white! To me, snow is something we get 5 months of the year, so not that exciting but I know it's exciting for newbies! It does really calm a landscape down and brightens up a dark dreary day. Enjoy!

    1. Thanks for that Julia! I suppose it must be pretty run of the mill seeing all that snow, but yes, for us it's quite exciting. The local kids were in their element, sledging down the field and having snowball fights - it was memorable stuff for them especially.

  2. SO pretty, Anna, Tresco and YOU! I wondered if you'd be clobbered. We were due the blizzard but it missed us, which pleased TP as he had his fair share in 40 years on Dartmoor. Hope the slushy aftermath wasn't too messy. Yes, extreme weather does disrupt island life. But I'm sure it's warm and sunny where you are now. Love your snowy wintery look, so cosy and perfect for your blizzard. The coat looks like one big warm hug! Wishing you a warmer first week of spring, x.

    1. Snow when it's freshly fallen seems to make everything chocolate box pretty, doesn't it Mary? We were very lucky to have rain the very next day which melted and washed the snow away as if it hadn't even been there at all!

I hope that spring has arrived with you too, my dear!

  3. Omg...how exciting for you! It’s so cool to experience a natural event that is so uncommon for your area. This past Summer there was a night that we got a little peek at the Northern Lights which is literally unheard of.
Love your coat...not only is it beautiful it’s perfect for a blizzard!

    1. Yes Debbie, it was mega exciting and distracting too - we spent the whole day at work nipping back and forth to see the transformation taking place. And the peaceful nature of it too, how lovely that is!

I was so pleased to bring that fur coat out one more time before spring arrived. It feels so glamourous!

  4. I can appreciate what a novelty snow is! It's not as tropical here in Victoria, BC, Canada, but we don't get snow very often, so it's always a bit of a treat. I love the coat! Beautiful pictures, Anna!

    1. You're right Sheila, it's a real treat to see snow, especially when you don't have to contend with all that slush afterwards!

      Have a great week!

  5. Yikes!! So unseasonably unexpected for your little island home! Full on blizzard conditions and snowmen in the yards must seem so strange to those of you who have lived on Tresco for many years! Of course your swimming has been curtailed for a bit but perhaps this snow will help to emphasize the beginning of your 60th year in a unique way (?)
    Stay warm dear Anna!

    1. Your absolutely right Jude, this recent snowfall has certainly punctuated our year and yes makes my 60th all the more memorable. I'm so pleased to have captured the island dressed in white as goodness knows how long it will be until it returns! It was a rare event here and all the more appreciated for that.

Wishing you a lovely week ahead!

    1. Yes, that was the biggest surprise of all Nancy - that freezing temperature! I layered up in thermals and cashmere as well as a furry trappers hat when I went out to take these shots. I don't think I could cope with these conditions as a regular event.

  7. Was it the Blizzard from the Lizard?! We got the 'Beast from the East' albeit a tame version. Lovely to see your photos of Tresco in the snow and what fun for the island kids. I hope the tender plants recover. Your fur coat looks just the thing to keep the cold out. Tessa xx

    1. I think we got blasted by both Tessa. Hopefully the freeze was over quick enough not to do lasting damage to the plant life here. I met the curator from the Abbey Gardens just the day prior to the snow and he was worried about the collection of lush and tender tropical plants. Sure it was good to get another opportunity to wear my fur coat, but I'd like to think I can pack them all away now.

      Enjoy your week!

  8. Anna it does look pretty and we had quite a lot, but it is gone now. I just ate and drank my way through it and binged on Netflix and played scrabble. xxxx

    1. Hilda it sounds like you had the right idea. I was working and not too upset at seeing the winter scene unfold all around us, but the extreme cold was a mighty shock!

  9. It's a source of wonder to me how different our familiar landscapes look when blanketed in snow!

You look ready to battle any blizzard; very warm and cozy!

We had a thaw on Sunday, Monday was a lovely day and today was pretty cool too; blue skies and sunshine

  11. Did anywhere escape the dusting of prettiness? London looked beautiful at the time like Tresco but my, the next couple of days here were horrendous! Your island looks so peaceful though Anna. Beautifu.
