A birthday lunch

It was my husband's birthday a couple of weeks ago and as usual it proved very difficult to buy a present for him. He didn't want anything, had all that he needed, don't waste your money etc, etc. Anyway, I decided to book a birthday lunch at our local beachside restaurant, The Ruin. I then arranged to bring our daughter home from the mainland to join us as a birthday surprise. This turned out to be the perfect present.

It's not easy to turn up for a surprise lunch when you have to catch a plane and a boat without letting anyone know, but Sasha pulled it off. We spent a lovely couple of hours enjoying the delicious food and drink. The birthday boy was very pleased, if not a bit surprised that we had managed to keep Sasha's arrival a secret from him.

My CK jeans were a lucky find in a charity shop, brand new, and just £4.95!

Sasha did the honours and took a few photos for me. The weather had gone very windy and chilly that day, but luckily the rain held off until we got back from our lunch. My woolly winter coat was a great defence against the cold, along with the cute little gloves that I found last winter in a bargain basket in a charity shop for 0.99p. I thought the satin shirt created a fab partnership with my boots, dressed down with these brand new (perfectly fitting) jeans.

Details - jeans: Calvin Klein (charity shopped), coat: Palermo, shirt: Next (charity shopped), boots: ASOS, bag: Candy bag, Furla, necklace: Magpie and Butterfly, rings: charity shop, belt: H&M.

Am late posting today, as I spent this morning watching the news from America. I'm still reeling. I can't imagine what it must be like for the country to wake up to this result.

I think I told you last time you wore this coat, that it reminds me of one my mom made!

    1. Thanks Sheila. We had such a lovely family day out. The boots and shirt really made the outfit, but yes the jeans worked pretty well too. See ya soon!

I'm dribbling over the boots and I love how they seem to match your shirt. The jeans are fabulous and you look so cozy and chic in your coat and bargain gloves.

    1. I feel so bad that I didn't mention my lovely son, Jamie. He lives on the island and therefore seemed to miss out on a name check - what a terrible mum I am! The fact is that neither hubby nor son would like to know that they're on my blog.
Thanks for all of the compliments on the outfit. I didn't seem like much of a combination until I went back to look at the photos yesterday and decided to feature it on what was such a glum, heart breaking day. I just wanted a lift and family provide the perfect solace for me every time.

  5. What a wonderful birthday present -- I love that you and your daughter were able to keep it a secret! Nice pizzas, too!

As far as how we in the States felt waking up this morning to the news of President Trump, speaking solely for myself, I can say I felt numb, horrified, on the verge of tears, humiliated and embarrassed for my nation, dumbfounded at the ignorance that led to almost 50% of Americans voting for a bigoted misogynist, and sick to my stomach.

    1. It worked out to be the best present I could have bought which set a wonderful tone for the day. Great company and wonderful food - what more could you want.
My heart goes out to everyone in the USA who tried to do the right thing. Misguided is the kindest way I can think of describing those who put this terrible man in this position of power. How very worrying for you, I'm so sorry.
I was troubled all day by the shallow nature of posting my blog on such a dreadfully sad day. Eventually I decided to post this happy family moment in an effort to counter the dark with some light.
Thank you for sharing your experiences and I wish you a better day today.

  6. I completely agree with Bette on the election of "the donald". For the last few months I've felt like I'm living in a political satire or a Saturday Night Live skit. This will be a challenging 4 years.
Anna, your husband is very handsome and Sasha is a lovely young woman.
What a fun celebration. It's so much fun to surprise someone with something you know they'll love. ANY opportunity to wear your new boots is a fun occasion right!!

    1. Dearest Judy, someone told me that in 2001 there was an episode of the Simpsons featuring President Trump departing from the Whitehouse in disgrace - fact is indeed stranger than fiction.
I'm so very proud of my family (I suppose we all are) and felt it was a good day to show them off. The boots are obviously the stars of the show, but hey I can live with that!
Wishing you a good day x

    1. The wonderful young man is my dear son, Jamie. He and my husband Steve, thankfully don't read my blog and hopefully won't object to the fame I've propelled them into. Family is everything to me and they grounded me yesterday when I felt rocked by the madness of the world.
Thanks so much for your lovely comments x

    1. Dear Laurie, they say that girls end up looking like their mothers, but it's not every girl's dream is it? I can't remember how long these jeans have languished in the bottom of my cupboard, completely forgotten until I needed a dark wash denim to go with these boots. Do you charity shop?

  11. Hi Anna,
That's a great blouse. Love the print. And the lunch looked yummy too. I remember one year we surprised my parents by secretly flying in several siblings from all across Canada for a big celebration. What a surprise that was! And so memorable. Glad your day went well.
I deleted my first comment ...spelling errors. Hate it when that happens and I don't notice until it's been published:)

    1. Hi Susan, lovely to hear from you again. Sounds like your secret was even bigger than mine to keep, so well done to you too! Glad you like the blouse - it was a charity shop find a couple of years ago and I've suddenly rediscovered it now. It's turned out to be a great partner for so many things already. Thanks for your comments x
      Have a great weekend!
