Spring is in the air

Wednesday, March 15, 2017

We are days away from the island being declared open for another season and spring is definitely in the air. Later this month the clocks will go forward and my morning swims will also move forward as I experience the joys of an early start. I love that feeling of anticipation, the excitement of another season ahead with all the new staff and holiday makers changing the dynamic of these small islands once again.

Very soon these blurry photo shoots will become a thing of the past as Polly takes on the role of my photographer for another summer season. Hurrah!

I just love the combination of camo and gold together.

I'll make no apologies for showing this gold (H&M) sweater again. It made its debut on my birthday in January (see here) and then again last month (as here) which just goes to show how useful it is (thanks Sasha). I've yet to pair it with a skirt so you may see it next month in a new guise. The three quarter length tartan jacket was from Next many moons ago and yet is one of my winter favourites. The gold boots were in the River Island sale a couple of years ago. I'm sporting sunglasses by Quay Australia and my rings are from charity shops.

I have to thank Sasha too for these camo trousers (Primark) which she gave me for Christmas. I'm a bit late to jump on this fashion bandwagon, but you know me, I do things at my own pace. I've worn these on and off for most of the winter. Working alone, seeing so few people within the course of a week, never mind a day, led me to slip into slovenly ways of repeat dressing. These camo trousers and a pair of blue jeans became my uniform with a thermal layer and cashmere polo neck finishing the look, day after day. Comfort seems to drive me more in the winter rather than innovation. But hey, spring is here and I feel inspired, refreshed with new ideas and opportunities to dress up, mix things about and find new outfits within my closet. At the end of the month I'll be breaking my clothes shopping ban (three whole months without buying a thing!) as I head off to the mainland on business. During my downtime, I'll be rooting about in each and every charity shop I come across as well as visiting my most favourite of retail stores, TK Maxx. I can barely contain myself!

My original camo trousers from over 20 years ago. Check out my pixie cut!

Straight ahead is the island of St Mary's, the main island of the Isles of Scilly, and to the left are the tiny uninhabited islands called the Eastern Islands. These small atolls, surrounded by virgin white sands are a perfect escape for the day - all you need is a little boat, a picnic with some long cool drinks and your perfect castaway companion!

  1. Spring is here Anna.
Even though it is still baltic at times!
This camo/gold look is perfect...layers and cosiness with plenty of space for some thermals (I would sneak on a couple of extra under-layers :oP ).
Check out your short hair! I am seriously thinking of getting mine re-chopped now.

    1. I'm still layering up with thermals currently Sam, as it's not quite warm here yet either. I really loved having a pixie cut, but kinda tired of it which is maybe what's happened with you. The great thing is that we can always have it all chopped off and then start all over again if we want.

    1. Thanks so much. This is a new colour combo for me, but I really do love it. And the tartan jacket was the perfect finish wasn't it?

The warm weather arrived here last week, but only managed to create fog which went on for days and days. Such are the perils of island life!

    1. Sorry that happened to you, but am also a bit relieved as it seems to happen to me a lot on your blog and I was getting a bit paranoid about it!

I thought you might approve of this look and yes, also the old photo was for you too. OMG, how excitied am I about some shopping - three whole months of waiting - I hope it will be worth it!

  4. I really like the camo and gold together; not a combination I would ever have thought of. Just imagine three whole months without buying any clothes - well done you!

I bet you wouldn't be able to do it if you had clothes/charity shops on your island! Anyway, well done and I hope you have a fabulous shopping trip.

I don't like TK Maxx - isn't it weird? I don't like it because you have to rummage; there seems to be be little order with their clothes - yet I love rummaging in charity shops and hate it when they're colour coded. I can't explain it really.

I've only ever bought three things in TK Maxx for myself, one of which I never wore and gave to a taller friend. My daughter buys some marvellous things in there though!

    1. It's a great colour combination isn't it Veronica? Do give it a try!

We do have a charity shop on the islands and yes, even a clothes shop here where I live, but I prefer to buy my clothes off island so that I don't end up wearing the same as everyone else. Seasalt is quite a big brand and they have a shop on St Mary's which the tourists and locals all love. The charity shops on the mainland have a huge catchment too which makes such a difference.

TK Maxx seems to be a bit Marmite doesn't it? Love it or hate it, there are some wonderful bargains to be had if you can find a way to work through it.

      Have a good day x

  5. Beautiful photos, Anna, I love the way you style your blogs around your beautiful island. Love the jacket. And as you await the arrival of daylight saving, warmer weather and longer light, our mornings on daylight saving are now dark at 6 a.m. and we're squeezing as much out of the end of the day as we can until 2nd April. The wet season didn't happen this summer (again) but we've had great rain this week and the warmth and humidity is combining with some confused leaves on the deciduous trees. Enjoy your swims. xx

    1. I feel the island backdrop is almost as important as my clothes some times Elizabeth. A lot of ladies love the scenery and some are visitors to the island who tune in to get a dose of island life to keep them going until their next holiday.

Dark mornings are such a downer for my winters so I do sympathise with you too. I just love when the days start to stretch out again as I know summer will not be far behind.

  6. Your tarten jacket is SO much like a coat I had when I was about 12 years old. Mine was a dark green tarten and had the same "chemise style" dropped waist and box pleats all around. I LOVED THAT COAT! I remember that it was one of the first times I had a big impact on choosing my winter coat as well.
I really like the combination of camo and gold too! I'm going to run with that idea!
A very fun "looking forward to spring" post Anna!!

    1. I'm so happy to hear that my beloved jacket has stirred up some lovely memories for you Jude. We all seem to have a piece like that which we associate with our passion for fashion being switched on - hurrah!

Do give the gold and camo theme a try - it's a winner I think x

  9. I fear that Spring is still a long ways off for us here.

All the gold is wonderful. I was very tempted to buy some gold booties when I was in BC with Sue and Mel. I'm regretting that a bit now.

I'm so happy you are feeling the good vibes that more sun and spring provides. I'm sure you're primed and ready for your next shopping trip.

Look at you 20 years ago!

    1. I somehow imagined that you would already possess gold booties? If not, why not my fashionista friend?

I'm busy making a wishlist for my shopping trip, but also like the idea of lots of surprises lurking in vintage/charity shops just waiting for me to discover them.

Hahaha, yes me 20 years ago!

      Have a fab week x

    1. Laurie it would be fantastic to show you round the sights. I'm sorry you didn't manage to get your holiday in Cornwall recently, but maybe that means you might turn up here sooner?

I'm so lucky to have a photographer, and one who loves the job too! Gold and camo was a lovely discovery - would suit you too I'm sure.
